Epiretinal membrane treatment Korea: symptoms and surgery
An epiretinal membrane is a thin film on the retina that can bend straight lines and blur your sight. For epiretinal membrane treatment Korea offers a stepwise approach: Sky Eye Clinic's retina team in Seoul scans the retina, monitors mild cases and performs vitrectomy when the membrane harms your vision.
What an epiretinal membrane is
Cells and cellular matrix in front of the retina separate from the neural tissue and form a thin membrane. The membrane can pull on the retina and change its shape. It is one of the conditions seen at our retina clinic.

Causes
The exact cause is not yet clear. Aging has some influence. Other links include:
- Inflammatory disease such as uveitis
- Vascular disease such as diabetes or hypertension
- Rarely, eye treatment such as retinal surgery or laser photocoagulation
See uveitis treatment and diabetic retinopathy treatment if you have those conditions.
Symptoms
Early on, most people feel nothing. Over time, depending on where the membrane sits and how it forms, you may have:
- Decreased vision
- Distorted vision, where objects look bent
Because early cases have no symptoms, a retinal scan at a routine eye exam can find the membrane before your vision changes.
Treatment
For epiretinal membrane treatment Korea doctors time care by watching how the disease progresses, based on severity. Mild cases are monitored.
If the membrane causes vision loss or severe distortion, or changes the structure of the retina, vitrectomy is performed to remove the abnormal membrane.

We use EVA Nexus vitrectomy equipment for retinal surgery.
When to see a doctor
See a retina specialist if straight lines look wavy or your sight blurs. Distortion can also come from macular degeneration, so an exam tells them apart. Book your free consultation to be examined with an interpreter.
Questions answered
What is an epiretinal membrane?
A thin membrane formed when cells and cellular matrix in front of the retina separate from the neural tissue.
What symptoms does it cause?
Often none at first. Later you may notice decreased vision or distorted vision where objects look bent.
Does every epiretinal membrane need surgery?
No. Timing is decided by monitoring progression according to severity. Surgery is considered when there is vision loss, severe distortion or structural retinal change.
What causes an epiretinal membrane?
The exact cause is not clear. Aging, uveitis, diabetes, hypertension and, rarely, retinal surgery or laser photocoagulation are linked to it.
